Register in advance for this meeting:

Objectives:

  1. Examine the role of name/blame/shame to loneliness, isolation and burnout in Medicine.
  2. Recognize how self-compassion fosters a culture of caring for oneself and in medicine.
  3. Value self-care and boundary setting as part of self-compassion.

Summary:

Emergency Medicine is one of the most stressful jobs out there. Emergency physicians must routinely make split-second decisions based on limited information, switch tasks from one adverse scenario to another, and field constant distractions and interruptions, often on insufficient sleep. The emotional impact of medical errors and vicarious trauma has been compared to developing post-traumatic stress disorder. Fortunately, studies have shown that cultivating self-compassion can help emergency physicians mitigate the negative impacts of stress and prevent burnout. In this webinar, we will explore the science behind compassion and how it can foster a culture of caring in medicine and beyond. While we have no control over many of the stressors in our lives, how we respond to them affects our outlook and well-being. Everyone, including those outside of healthcare, can benefit from these practical strategies on managing stress, aiding recovery, and dealing with the residue of trauma.
