Justin Byron, PhD, MHS, an assistant professor in the department of family medicine, is the principal investigator on a new R21 $428,000 grant from the FDA and the National Cancer Institute. The project will use cognitive psychology to develop and test methods for correcting the public’s misconception that low nicotine cigarettes are less carcinogenic than other cigarettes. This is a timely issue as the FDA plans to dramatically reduce the nicotine in cigarettes, a regulation that would make cigarettes much less addictive but not safer to smoke. The research team includes Adam Goldstein, Leah Ranney, and Kristen Jarman from UNC Family Medicine, Tara Queen from the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Noel Brewer from the Gillings School of Global Public Health.
