The NIH Office of the Director-funded grant “Iron-CLAD: securely advancing All of Us participant characterization with proven platforms and collaborations” (Dr. Melissa Haendel, PI) has been transferred to UNC Genetics.

Dr. Piotr Mieczkowski (Professor, Genetics) was awarded an equipment grant from the North Carolina Biotechnology Center (NCBC) for his proposal titled “Enhancing the High Throughput Sequencing Facility at UNC: Upgrading from Fluent 1080 to Tecan DreamPrep NGS Workstation for Improved Capability”.

The Center for Linkage and Acquisition of Data (CLAD), led by Dr. Melissa Haendel (Distinguished Professor, Genetics) “expands the types and research utility of program data available to researchers through passive data streams.” 

Laura Raffield, PhD (Assistant Professor, Genetics) has been awarded a new U01 grant from NIA for her project titled “Proteomic biomarkers of incident cognitive impairment in Black and White adults”.

Jim Crowley, PhD (Professor, Genetics) was awarded an R13 grant from the National Institute of Mental Health to fund student, postdoc, and junior faculty attendance to the Annual Latin American Congress on Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. 

Erin Heinzen, PharmD, PhD (Associate Professor, Pharmacy and Genetics) was awarded a new R21 grant from NINDS for her project titled “Genotype-informed single-cell transcriptomic profiling of mosaic brain tissue”.

Jenny Ting, PhD (Distinguished Professor, Genetics and Microbiology and Immunology) was awarded a new grant from the NMSS for her project titled “Investigating a novel beneficial gut microbe for potential MS therapy”.

A new supplement to the NIGMS R35 grant  “Mechanisms of SWI/SNF complex assembly and function”  (Dr. Jesse Raab, PI) has been awarded to Jackie Brinkman, BS.

Graduate Students from the Curriculum in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology and the Curriculum in Genetics and Molecular Biology celebrated the end of academic year 2023-2024 with a summer kick-off on the lawn of Genetic Medicine Building on the UNC campus on Thursday, May 23.

The UNC Department of Genetics joined together the Department of Pharmacology, the Curriculum in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (BCB), the Curriculum in Genetics and Molecular Biology (GMB), and the UNC Office of Rural Initiatives to participate in a day of community outreach with “Heal Day with the Heels”.
