Certificate Programs
Several certificate programs are available to graduate students in the biomedical sciences. These typically require coursework and attendance at seminar series. Certificates and conferred only after all other requirements of the doctoral program have been met. Certificate programs that might be of interest to GMB students are listed below, along with coursework requirements and how these fit into the GMB course requirements. Please refer to specific certificate program sites for additional requirements and instructions on applying.
Bioinformatics and Computational Biology
A certificate of specialization in Bioinformatics and Computation Biology (BCB) is available for students seeking formal training in these areas while pursuing their degree in a related discipline, such as GMB. Certificate students are required to take four of the core BCB modules.
These four modules would satisfy the quantitative/statistical/computational requirement for GMB plus one full elective course. The other elective could be met by taking additional modules from any appropriate discipline or any one full course.
Please see the Certificate in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology website for more information.
Chromatin and Epigenetics
The goal of this program is to provide students with training in epigenetic mechanisms and exposure to approaches and techniques used in epigenetic research. Three courses and one seminar are required; two of these courses (GNET 631 and GNET 621) are already required of all GMB students, leaving one course (BIOC 702) and the seminar (BIOC 703) remaining as required elements for the certificate.
Please see the Certificate in Chromatin and Epigenetics website for more information.
Translational Medicine
To earn a certificate in translational medicine, students must take either of these two-semester series of courses:
PATH 713 – Mechanisms of Disease (3)
PATH 714 – Mechanisms of Disease Laboratory (2)
PATH 715 – Systemic Pathology (3)
PATH 716 – Systemic Pathology Laboratory (2)
– or –
CBPH 852 – Experimental Physiology of Health and Human Disease (4)
CBPH 853 – Experimental Physiology of health and Human Disease (4)
Either series would count as your electives for GMB. Students that elect this certificate program often take these intensive courses in year 2 and TA in year 3.
Please see the Certificate in Translational Medicine website for more information.
Cardiovascular Science
The Certificate in Cardiovascular Science is available to students whose dissertation research is done under the direction of a member of the McAllister Heart Institute or whose dissertation contains a significant cardiovascular component. Course requirements include:
- 6 credit hours from:
PATH 766– Current topics in Cardiovascular Science (3)
PATH767 – Pathobiology of Cardiovascular Disease (3)
PATH 920 – Seminar in Interdisciplinary Vascular Biology (1) - AND at least one of the following (each is 3 credit hours):
PATH 713 – Pathophysiologic Basis of Disease: Mechanisms of Disease
PATH 715 – Pathophysiologic Basis of Disease: Systemic Pathology
PHYI 702 – Experimental Physiology of Health and Human Disease
PHYI 703 – Experimental Physiology of health and human disease
PHCO 701 – Intro to Molecular Pharmacology
PHCO 702 – Principles of Pharmacology and Physiology
BIOL 624 – Developmental genetics
These will satisfy the seminar course (anything from the top group) and one elective (the course from the lower set). Since only one seminar counts toward the five course minimum, only one of the to set of courses will contribute the GMB requirements.
Please see the Certificate in Cardiovascular Science website for more information.
College Science Teaching
The Graduate Certificate in College Science Teaching (CCST)provides students with teaching experience under the guidance of a master teacher, as well as coursework in pedagogy and assessment, with a capstone immersive teaching internship at a local institution. Coursework includes:
- A science course elective
- BIOL 810: College Science Teaching (2)
- EDUC 890: Curriculum Design Seminar (2)
- EDUC 865: College Teaching Internship (2)
GNET 621 can be used as the science course elective. The other courses do not count toward GMB requirements.
Please see the Certificate in College Science Teaching website for more information.
