Announcement Approach
What is an Announcement?
Announcements are brief statements that assume parents are ready to vaccinate and suggests that HPV vaccine is part of routine care. Announcements have been proven to be more impactful than conversations that merely engage parents in open-ended discussions.
What is the Announcement Approach?
The Announcement Approach gives primary care professionals tools that allow them to communicate HPV vaccine recommendations to parents. The Announcement Approach pairs presumptive announcements with techniques that meet the needs of hesitant parents.
Announce
- Note child’s age
- Announce children this age get a vaccine that prevents 6 cancers
- Say you will vaccinate today
- Move on with the rest of the visit
If parent hesitates…Connect and counsel
- Ask the parent for their main concern
- To show you’re listening, repeat the parent’s language
- Address parent’s concern using a research-tested message
- Clearly recommend getting HPV vaccine today and give a reason
If parent declines…Try again
- Say you will bring up HPV vaccine at the next visit
- Make a note in the chart
