Dr. Ajay Gulati and Dr. Mike Kappelman presented, “ImproveCareNow: Integrating Clinical Care, Improvement and Research” at IHQI’s Speaker Series event, held February 14, 2019 in Bondurant G-100.

Dr. Gulati, Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Gastroenterology, spoke first. He highlighted the challenges of quality improvement work in patients with chronic disease and provided an overview of the ImproveCareNow (ICN) network. Additionally, he showed an example of how the framework of ICN has been adapted to local needs and resources. Finally, Dr. Gulati demonstrated how ICN is used to track outcomes for patients.

Dr. Kappelman, Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Gastroenterology, followed, detailing the integration of quality improvement work with research. He outlined the key components of the ICN Learning Health Network and discussed the evolution of research within ICN. This evolution has included:

  1. Reporting on QI
  2. Retrospective studies utilizing registry data
  3. Targeted chart reviews
  4. Prospective studies
  5. Pragmatic trials

Each doctor concluded with lessons learned, such as, “Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good,” and “Collaboration accelerates learning and improvement.” Ultimately, the audience came away with an understanding of how the integration of quality improvement work with research allows learning from every clinical encounter, and how a network approach accelerates the dissemination and implementation of those findings.
