UNC School of Medicine students in laboratory, circa 1979.

Acknowledgements

This project resulted from ongoing collaborative work on the part of UNC School of Medicine students, faculty, librarians, archivists, and administrators. The generosity of our alum and their families has been critical at every step.

SNMA leaders Candace Barr and Imani Sweatt envisioned the project in 2021, and passed the torch on to Herman Freeman, Nzia Hall, and Kristen Williams.

A dedicated group of medical students carried out interviews, checked transcripts, wrote abstracts, and pored through archives on behalf of the project: Brian Wood, Quiara Shade, Carolina Vo, Melanie Hardee, Dominic Lal, Gianna Jones, Jessica Gingles, Samuel Tate, Candace Barr, Imani Sweatt, Herman Freeman, Nzia Hall, and Kristen Williams. We are fortunate our colleague Dr. Stephanie Brown, at the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, generously jumped in to assist in this endeavor too, at a critical time.

Our extraordinary colleagues at the Medical Alumni Affairs Office helped us create a list of alum to interview: Associate Dean Dr. Wesley Fowler, Director Katherine Harris, and Todd Dawson.

The Office of Medical Student Education has supported this project from day one: Dr. Beat Steiner, Dr. Kim Nichols, Dr. Georgette Dent, Dr. Elizabeth Steadman, Cortilya Jones, and Shannon Isley.

The department of Social Medicine, and chair Dr. Jonathan Oberlander in particular, encouraged the pursuit of this work.

Fabulous archival materials and permission to use them came to us via our UNC University Libraries and its talented librarians and archivists: Nick Graham, Matt Turi, Jason Tomberlin, Lyric Grimes, Tim Hodgdon, Sara Wood, and Chris DuBose.

Our colleagues Jasmin Alvarez Martinez, Bradley Olson, David Kinton, and the rest of the UNC School of Medicine’s Web Design/Development team expertly designed and developed the web exhibit for the Black Alumni Experience Project.

Project Director Dr. Raúl Necochea López gets the honor of extending our heartfelt thanks to all.
