Medicine Grand Rounds, Stephan Moll, “Thrombophilia Evaluation: Choosing Wisely”

Dr. Stephan Moll’s expertise is in thrombosis and anticoagulation. In this presentation, he will set forth clinically important facts about the pathophysiology, prevalence and thrombotic risk of inherited and acquired thrombophilias. In addition, he will describe which patient and family members to test for thrombophilia, what tests to obtain, and at what time to test. The implications of a thrombophilia on an individual’s health also will be presented, in addition to detailed information about how thrombophilia tests are done in the laboratory and what parameters (acute thrombosis, presence of anticoagulant) may influence the test results.

Dr. Moll is Professor of Medicine in the UNC Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center. His clinical interest is coagulation and classical hematology, with a particular focus on thrombosis and anticoagulation. Dr. Moll’s research interests include clinical trials on new anticoagulants, better use of established anticoagulants, antiphospholipid antibody syndrome and postthrombotic syndrome. He takes a special interest in clinical-medical education of patients, the public, and health care professionals.
