Medicine Grand Rounds- Dr. Joshua Berkowitz presents: “Novel, minimally-invasive therapies in Orthopaedics: Between cortisone and the OR”

Dr. Josh Berkowitz is a Tar Heel through and through, receiving both his undergraduate and medical degrees at UNC before going on to complete combined residency training in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at UNC Hospitals.  After residency, he served as Chief Resident across both departments and subsequently completed Sports Medicine fellowship training here as well.

     Dr. Berkowitz is appointed to the faculty of the UNC School of Medicine as an Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics.  He serves as a Team Physician for UNC Athletics, with primary responsibilities for Women’s Basketball, Men’s Lacrosse and Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving.  He also works closely with UNC Football and is the primary provider for UNC student-athletes from all 28 athletics programs who require point-of-care ultrasound for diagnostics and/or procedural guidance.

A clinically oriented physician, Dr. Berkowitz’s interests largely involve patient care, medical education and advancing minimally-invasive management of musculoskeletal conditions.  In conjunction with Dr. Stephan Moll, he has helped to develop a specialty clinic devoted to managing high-level athletes nationwide who have experienced issues with clotting and anticoagulation, producing several publications on this topic. Outside of the university, Dr. Berkowitz serves as Team Physician for Chapel Hill High School as well as local professional ultimate teams the Carolina Flyers and the Raleigh Radiance.  He is a member of the Medical Advisory Group for USA Ultimate and serves as an Event Physician for the National Basketball Association, providing medical coverage at major sporting events nationally and internationally.
