Formed in 2002, the Center for Esophageal Diseases and Swallowing (CEDAS) at the University of North Carolina (UNC) consists of an exceptional team of physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and research coordinators. We perform world-class clinical and translational research, provide state-of-the-art multi-disciplinary care, write professional guidelines, and chair national organizations. UNC CEDAS represents one of the largest, best known, and most successful esophageal centers in the United States.

CEDAS maintains an extensive referral base and its providers manage a diverse and complex array of esophageal conditions. The group completes approximately 4,000 endoscopies per year, including advanced endoscopic procedures (radiofrequency ablations, esophageal endoscopic resections, complex esophageal dilations, esophageal cryotherapy, EndoFLIP, reflux/Bravo testing, endoscopic stent placement, pneumatic dilation). A full suite of motility testing is also available. Additionally, CEDAS members publish prolifically and have substantial grant funding. CEDAS faculty have extensive teaching and mentorship experience, both informally and formally, resulting in local and national recognition as educators, and facilitating the consistent appointment of mentored trainees at leading academic institutions (list below of recent graduates).

UNC has a long-standing history of offering a one-year advanced fellowship in esophageal diseases. This is a holistic year with the intention of preparing the graduating fellow to excel in academic esophagology. There is an outpatient focus, with no expectation for inpatient consultation or call. Trainees will receive 1:1 mentorship from the program director, with whom they will build a mentorship team. There are substantial opportunities to tailor training. Opportunities include exposure to surgical collaborators, speech pathologists, radiologists, and advanced endoscopists who perform peroral endoscopic myotomy. Similarly, there exists a wealth of research opportunities both within UNC CEDAS and the UNC Center for Gastrointestinal Biology and Disease to develop content and methodological expertise.

Requirements for the program include completion of a 3-year general gastroenterology fellowship and board eligibility or enrollment within a T-32 research fellowship. We are unable to provide visa sponsorship. Applicants must demonstrate US citizenship or equivalent (naturalized citizen, employed authorization document [EAD], green card).
