A Message From the Chief

Dr. David Hemsey with Welcome text on bottom of photo

On our website, you will learn about our clinical, education, research and quality improvement programs. You will also find general information about our faculty and our division. Thank you for your interest in our services.

Our division is comprised of over 50 physicians, advanced practice providers and staff dedicated to the comprehensive care of hospitalized patients at UNC Medical Center, both in Chapel Hill and at the Hillsborough Campus. We provide a broad range of inpatient services including general internal medicine and pediatrics, medical procedures, medical consultation and co-management for our surgical and other specialty colleagues. We have developed particular expertise in providing high-quality, efficient care for patients under observation status and those patients acutely ill with COVID-19 pneumonia. Patients on all of our teams receive patient-centered and high value care which is closely coordinated with our many specialists and multidisciplinary teams.

Our faculty are highly rated clinician-educators, providing innovative medical education for residents and students across the disciplines at UNC. Our team heads the effort to train the UNC Internal Medicine residents in bedside procedures and point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), bringing a new technology to speed diagnosis and improve safety at the bedside. We have leaders in education who serve as residency program directors and associate directors, clerkship leaders and faculty for undergraduate medical education courses.

The Division of Hospital Medicine works locally to enhance the overall performance of our health care system and improve patient flow throughout their stay through quality improvement efforts. Nationally, we also strive to advance the science of hospital medicine through clinical research. Previous initiatives have focused on patients with hip fragility fractures, vaso-occlusive crises related to sickle cell disease and alcohol abuse disorders.

We are especially proud of a culture that enables our team to provide the very best care to their patients, their loved ones and each other. We are here to serve you.

Sincerely

David Hemsey, MD
Chief, Division of Hospital Medicine
