Myron Cohen, MD, the Yeargan-Bate Distinguished Professor of Medicine, Microbiology and Immunology, and Epidemiology, discussed the COVID-19 / coronavirus in an interview with CNN, Thursday, February 27.
“This is an emerging pathogen and the most important thing for us to do is to learn the rules that govern this virus,” says Cohen, director of the UNC Institute for Global Health & Infectious Diseases. “There are rules that govern transmission and the efficiency of transmission, and when transmission can and cannot occur. Then, there are rules that govern what the infection will do.”
Cohen acknowledges the “terrific” scientific capacity that is being applied to understanding the virus, and why approximately 80% of people have mild infections while a smaller number have severe infections.
