The University of North Carolina Department of Medicine stands as a beacon of excellence in healthcare, comprised of 12 medicine subspecialty divisions and 11 associated research centers. With a dedicated team of approximately 425 faculty, 100 advanced practice providers, 200 staff members, 100 residents, and 100 fellows, the department is renowned for its collaborative and caring approach to providing the best possible care to a diverse patient population.

Inpatient Care

The commitment to excellence is evident in the inpatient care provided by the Department of Medicine. Annually, approximately 14,000 patients are admitted to these teams. Encompassing patient admission and discharge days, consultations, and critical care cases, remarkably, the department cares for an average of 450 patients each day. This underscores the department’s dedication to meeting the healthcare needs of a substantial and varied patient base.

Ambulatory Care

Beyond the hospital walls, the department extends its impact through robust ambulatory care services. On any given day, 900-plus patients receive expert care in the department’s specialty clinics or outpatient settings. Physicians alone welcomed nearly 30,000 new patients in the last fiscal year, showcasing the department’s accessibility and commitment to addressing the evolving healthcare needs of the community.

The collaborative efforts of advanced practice providers and trainees, working alongside attending physicians, resulted in approximately an additional 10,000 new patients seen during the same period. Impressively, the department maintained continuity of care by attending to over 190,000 returning patients. This holistic approach ensures that patients receive comprehensive and ongoing support, emphasizing the department’s dedication to building lasting relationships with the communities it serves.

Procedures

The commitment to delivering comprehensive care is further underscored by the department’s impressive procedural statistics. In the last fiscal year, the department performed more than 20,000 gastrointestinal procedures, showcasing its expertise in addressing a wide range of digestive health issues. Additionally, around 3,200 heart catheterizations and 1,200 cardiac electrophysiology procedures were conducted, demonstrating a commitment to advanced cardiovascular care. Furthermore, pulmonologists completed about 600 bronchoscopies and 550 pleural procedures, exemplifying their dedication to addressing a variety of pulmonary conditions. 

Locations

The Department of Medicine’s impact on patient care extends far beyond its main campus, with strategically located facilities to ensure accessibility for communities throughout the state. Eleven specialties provide care at Eastowne, offering a convenient and specialized healthcare experience. Additionally, five specialties extend their services at Panther Creek. As the reach of the department continues to grow, patients in Burlington, Hillsborough, Nash, Rockingham, Fayetteville, and Wake County are benefiting from the expertise of providers at facilities in select specialties.
