hispanic-heritage-monthDiversity Awareness in October

National Hispanic Heritage Month continues through October 15. Learn more about hispanic heritage and history.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. This observance was launched in 1945 when Congress declared the first week in October as “National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week.” In 1998, the week was extended to a month and renamed. The annual event draws attention to employment barriers that still need to be addressed.

October is also LGBT History Month, a US observance that started in 1994 to recognize lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history, and the history of the gay-rights movement.

Critical Race Parenting Education – Register for October 5

Critical race theory traces its origins to a framework of legal scholarship that gained momentum in the 1980s by challenging conventional thinking about race-based discrimination. It recognizes race as a social construct and racism as something embedded in legal systems and policies, not just the product of individual bias or prejudice.

Dr. Ronda Bullock, executive director of the Durham organization “We Are” (working to extend anti-racist education), recognizes an urgent need to move conversations forward in white communities. She invites the public to attend the educational seminar “Critical Race Parenting for White Folks” on Tuesday, October 5, from 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM EDT.

The virtual event will include a presentation and discussion, and registration is required. After registering, attendees will receive a confirmation email containing information about how to join the meeting.
