After three years of planning, the time has come. In what was once a vacant lot near the 15-501/I-40 intersection, now stands a six-story 150,000 square-foot medical building and 1,000 parking space garage. UNC Health’s Eastowne Medical Office Building represents the vision of the future of academic medicine and an opportunity to transform care in ways that best serve patients and support teaching and research missions.
This brand new, state-of-the-art facility is conveniently located and easily accessible. The building itself is warm and easy-to-navigate, with each floor having its own North Carolina-based theme. Patient visit workflows are designed to minimize time spent in waiting rooms (kiosk check-in) and maximize time in exam rooms (in addition to the clinician visit, nurse rooming, check-out, and phlebotomy will all take place within the exam room). With all Department of Medicine specialties (except oncology) on-site, as well as Same Day Clinic, lab services, imaging services, infusions, specialty testing, clinical trials, retail pharmacy, and grab-and-go food, Eastowne is truly a one-stop shop for almost all patient needs.

Eastowne was also designed to optimize staff and clinician experiences. The atmosphere is cheerful, including ample natural light and an “on stage/off stage” design with centralized, modern workspaces. All specialties are increasing their total number of exam rooms, each of which is equipped for video visits. A new care team model intends to fully support clinicians throughout their workdays. And co-locating all specialties will foster a greater sense of community and facilitate multispecialty collaboration.
Eastowne is also designed to support our academic mission. Within the clinical trials unit, more than 75 research staff will conduct 100-plus trials. And dedicated areas for teaching and conferences will support fellow, resident, and medical student education.
