About

Abbie was born in Ethiopia and came to the United States where her family settled in Ohio.  She attended The Ohio State University for college where she majored in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics.  She was accepted in the MD/PhD program at OSU and obtained her PhD in cancer biology.  Her research work has primarily focused on the role of IL6 signaling through the glycoprotein 130 (GP130) receptor leading to elevated oncogene expression in dedifferentiated liposarcoma. She has also been actively involved in medical education focused research including a project examining the impact of race based medical misinformation education on medical student perception of racial healthcare disparities.  Abbie is planning on pursuing fellowship training in Hematology/Oncology via the ABIM research pathway. She has served in multiple volunteer and mentoring role and enjoys running, weightlifting, and long walks with her poodle!
