Andrea Knittel, MD, PhD, from UNC Health’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, has contributed to the article titled “Fellowship for Academic Generalists in Obstetrics and Gynecology: Is It Overdue?” published in Obstetrics & Gynecology, also known as “The Green Journal,” the official publication of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG).
In the article, Dr. Knittel explores the challenges faced by academic specialists in obstetrics and gynecology due to limited research training, which affects their productivity and career progression compared to subspecialty-trained peers. The piece examines current research fellowship programs, proposes innovative solutions, and discusses how these programs can be integrated with existing career development opportunities to improve support and research capabilities.
Dr. Knittel attributes her success to the support from the UNC Department of ObGyn,
“I’m so proud to be at an institution that has invested in post-residency research training for generalists. My invitation to contribute to this piece was derived in no small part, I believe, from the excellent reputation of the department’s educational programs generally and of our fellowship in particular.”
