Image of David BerkoffThe Department of Orthopaedics at UNC Health is pleased to announce that David Berkoff, MD, has been elected President of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM), one of the nation’s leading professional organizations dedicated to advancing sports medicine and the care of active individuals.

Dr. Berkoff’s election reflects his longstanding commitment to sports medicine, clinical leadership, and improving patient care. His presidency will take place during the 2028–2029 term. Prior to assuming this role, he will serve in several key leadership positions within the organization, including Second Vice President beginning in April 2026, followed by First Vice President, and then President starting in April 2028.

At UNC Health, Dr. Berkoff serves in multiple leadership roles, including Co-Director of the UNC Sports Medicine Institute, Vice Chair of Clinical Operations within the Department of Orthopaedics, and Medical Director for Subspecialty Services in the UNC Health Access Center. He is also a Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics and is widely recognized for his expertise in nonoperative sports and musculoskeletal medicine.

The American Medical Society for Sports Medicine is a national organization focused on education, research, advocacy, and collaboration among sports medicine physicians. In discussing his goals for his future term as President, Dr. Berkoff emphasized the importance of leveraging the expertise and engagement of AMSSM’s membership to further strengthen the organization and the field.

Throughout his career, Dr. Berkoff has demonstrated a strong commitment to caring for athletes and active individuals at all levels, while contributing to the advancement of sports medicine through education, mentorship, and leadership. His election as President of AMSSM further reflects the national impact of the work being done across UNC Health and the Department of Orthopaedics.
