“The WHO’s Basic Emergency Care Course in Kenya”

Dr. Travis Wieland

Travis Wieland, MD, MA, MSc
Chief Resident, Dept of Emergency Medicine
OGHE Global Health Scholar

About the Speaker

Dr. Wieland had a diverse educational background before going to medical school in his home state of Illinois. He completed post-undergraduate language training at the University of Pennsylvania, then did graduate work in Classics at the University of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom. Following this, he returned to the United States to study at the Committee on International Relations at the University of Chicago, after which he went back overseas to live and work. While abroad, he decided to pursue medicine with the end of combining his interest in global affairs with his desire to have a career that focused on helping others. He is now in his final year of emergency medicine residency at the University of North Carolina, and will be pursuing fellowship training in global health at the University of Wisconsin-Madison after graduation.

OGHE Global Health Forum

The UNC Institute for Global Health and Infectious Diseases’ Office of Global Health Education sponsors a monthly GLOBAL HEALTH FORUM that features UNC clinicians, researchers, resident physicians, and scholars through which we hope to build a global health learning community through the SOM; an opportunity for residents to showcase their work and also to involve more faculty with diverse global health interests and expertise and to mix medical student and resident audiences. We hope to have diverse formats – including lectures, resident presentations of scholarly work, journal clubs and case studies. The OGHE Global Health Forum takes place every 3rd Thursday of the month from 12:00pm-1:00pm on UNC’s campus/virtually. For more information, feedback, or to suggest a topic or speaker, please contact OGHE Assistant Director, Shay Slifko
