Andrew Smitherman, MD, MSc was promoted to Associate Professor of Pediatrics effective March 1, 2023. Dr. Smitherman has been a faculty member in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology since 2017. Dr. Smitherman is the Medical Director of the UNC Adolescents and Young Adults Oncology Program. As a pediatric hematologist and oncologist, Dr. Smitherman’s research interests address adolescent and young adult cancer care, survivorship care, treatment-associated late effects and outcome research. In particular, his research focuses on providing and improving cancer care for survivors of childhood, adolescent and young adult cancers as well as characterizing emerging chronic treatment related morbidities and identifying biomarkers predictive of these morbidities through prospective cohort studies.
