Executive Vice Chair, Department of Pediatrics
Associate Dean, School of Medicine Outreach Initiatives
Pediatrician in Chief, UNC Children’s
With mixed emotions, we announce that Michael Steiner, MD, MPH, has accepted a new role at the University of Oklahoma (OU) College of Medicine as the next Chairperson of Pediatrics and Clinical Service Chief of Oklahoma Children’s Hospital. His last day at UNC will be December 1st, 2025.
Dr. Steiner first joined UNC in 1998 as a resident in our medicine/pediatrics program and later served as chief resident for pediatrics. He then worked in the National Health Service Corps and at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles before returning to UNC as a faculty member in 2006. Since returning to UNC, he has served in numerous leadership roles spanning academic and clinical missions. These roles included Division Chief of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine and the Interim Chief of Allergy/Immunology. He currently serves as the Executive Vice-Chair in the Department of Pediatrics, Pediatrician in Chief for UNC Children’s, and the Associate Dean of Outreach Initiatives for the School of Medicine. In recent years, he facilitated the partnership between UNC and Novant Health and other outreach initiatives. He is an outstanding, humble, innovative leader whose impact at UNC Children’s has led to transformational care of children across North Carolina.
The OU Department of Pediatrics has approximately 250 faculty members and is the largest department in the College of Medicine. Oklahoma Children’s Hospital is the primary specialty hospital for children in the state. Currently, it has over 300 beds, but it also has a pediatric behavioral health tower under construction and a pediatric cardiac tower being planned. The Department and Oklahoma Children’s Hospital are fortunate to have him as their next leader.
We are thankful for Dr. Steiner’s years of service to UNC and the children and families of North Carolina. He will be missed!
