Emergency Medicine

Pediatric Emergency Medicine provides the highest quality and technologically advanced emergency medical care to ill and injured children in the Triangle area, as well as throughout the state. UNC Children’s Emergency Department offers a full range of primary, tertiary, and quaternary subspecialty care attached to the Triangle’s only Level I pediatric trauma center (one of only 41 in the nation). Providers also care for children in the UNC Children’s Urgent Care at Raleigh. UNC Pediatric Emergency Medicine physicians are committed to quality improvement and help lead the department in ongoing improvement and standardization of our clinical processes.

2025 Carolina Quality and Safety Award
The Pediatric Emergency Medicine team has been honored with a 2025 UNC Hospitals and UNC Faculty Physicians Carolina Quality and Safety Team Award for their project, “Debriefing After Clinical Events in the UNC Pediatric Emergency Department: Development of a Culture of Safety”. Congratulations to Dr. Shiva Zargham on her leadership of this project!

Park Named Associate Chief Medical Officer for Pediatrics at UNC Children’s
Dan Park, MD, MBA has been asked serve as the Associate Chief Medical Officer for Pediatrics at UNC Children’s. Dr. Park joined UNC Hospitals in 2016 and has served as the Medical Director of the Pediatric Emergency Department and as a Lead Informatics Physician for the Information Services Division (ISD). He brings a dedication to advancing safe, innovative, and family-centered care for children to this role with a commitment to fostering genuine interdisciplinary collaboration across teams. Welcome New Physician Faculty: Marie-Pier Lirette, MBChB, MSc
Dr. Marie Lirette joined the Department of Pediatrics as an Assistant Professor in Pediatric Emergency Medicine on August 29, 2025. Dr. Lirette attended Wesley College, Melbourne, Australia for her International Baccalaureate and earned her medical degree from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom in 2014. She completed her pediatric residency at the Hospital for Sick Children, University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada where she remained to complete a fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine in 2023. Dr. Lirette earned a Masters in Healthcare Quality and Safety from Harvard University in 2024. Most recently, Dr. Lirette has been working as a pediatric emergency medicine physician at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead, Sydney, Australia.
