Families affected by mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) gathered at Boshamer Stadium this spring for a special evening of baseball, community, and awareness during Carolina Baseball’s MPS Awareness Night.

Hosted in partnership with the Muenzer MPS Research & Treatment Center, the event brought together patients, families, clinicians, researchers, and supporters from across the region to celebrate the strength of the MPS community while raising awareness of these rare genetic disorders.

For many families, the evening provided a unique opportunity to connect with others who understand the challenges of living with MPS. While clinic visits and conferences often focus on medical care and research, MPS Awareness Night offered families a chance to build relationships, share experiences, and enjoy time together in a welcoming environment.

“The event was really about bringing families together,” said Dr. Kim Stephens, Executive Director of the Muenzer MPS Research & Treatment Center. “Many of these families face similar challenges, and opportunities like this help create meaningful connections and a sense of community.”

The evening also honored the legacy of JR Anton, a young man from Nebraska with MPS II (Hunter syndrome) who developed a special bond with Carolina Baseball beginning during the team’s College World Series appearance in Omaha in 2006. Over the years, JR became an extended member of the Carolina Baseball family, creating lasting friendships with players, coaches, and staff.

For nearly two decades, JR and his family visited Chapel Hill, attending practices, spending time with the team, and creating memories that meant a great deal to everyone involved. His legacy continues to inspire both the Carolina Baseball program and the MPS community.

MPS Awareness Night reflects the Muenzer MPS Research & Treatment Center’s commitment to supporting patients and families beyond the clinic through education, advocacy, community engagement, and comprehensive care.

We are grateful to Carolina Baseball, UNC Children’s, the UNC Health Foundation, and the many families and supporters who helped make this special evening possible.
