Research led by Dr. Robert Mealer describes how a unique class of sugar molecules in the brain is enriched a specialized structures called nodes of Ranvier. This work provides new insight to a group of genes that are involved with genetic disorders of the brain, including schizophrenia.

This was the first study to examine white matter microstructure in school-aged children with Down Syndrome. A spatially specific pattern of results indicated a dissociation between intra- and inter-hemispheric pathways, which could inform more targeted interventions and clinical trials in Down Syndrome.
