Rebecca Bottom, MD, joined the Center in 2019 and became medical director at the Wake STEP Community Clinic in 2020. At Wake STEP, Dr. Bottom works with a multi-disciplinary team to support the whole-person wellness of individuals living with severe persistent mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The Wake STEP team focuses on providing community-based care that considers the diverse social, economic, and psychiatric needs of Wake County residents. As an assistant professor in the UNC Department of Psychiatry, Dr. Bottom is also involved in educating resident psychiatrists learning to deliver care in community-based settings.

Dr. Bottom is also the Associate Vice Chair for Quality and Safety for the Department of Psychiatry. In this role, she works with leaders in the Department and UNC Health to identify ways of improving the quality and safety of care delivered across the continuum of mental health care.

Dr. Bottom is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. She received her undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Louisville. She completed a psychiatry residency and served as chief resident at UNC School of Medicine. She is a member of the American Psychiatric Association and the North Carolina Psychiatric Association.
