Local Boy Scout builds deck at the Farm at Penny Lane as part of his Eagle project

Christopher Jamrog, a member of Boy Scout Troop 244 in Cary, N.C. and now a freshman at UNC Chapel Hill, completed in August, a freestanding deck with benches at the Farm at Penny Lane, as part of his Eagle Scout project.

Jamrog with assistance from other volunteers constructed the 14×14 ft. deck under a large tree, which will provide a shady space for clients and volunteers to gather during horticulture therapy group, volunteer workdays, and other activities.

“It provides a lovely space for people to socialize or to seek shelter from the hot sun,’ says Beth Rossi, director, quality management at the Center

He also raised $750 to purchase building supplies and renting tools to build the deck through the online fundraiser “gofundme” and recruited volunteers to assist with the project.

Jamrog received his Eagle Award in September.

“The Farm at Penny Lane is grateful to have such a beautiful addition to the property and looks forward to using it for many years,” continues Rossi.

Thanksgiving celebration for patients/clients in the community continues for the 19th year

The UNC Center for Excellence in Community Mental Health continued a Thanksgiving lunch tradition started 19 years ago by Thava Mahadevan, MS, the current director of operations at the Center, on Nov. 23, 2017 at the Chapel in the Pines Presbyterian Church. Mahadevan started the annual celebration when he was executive director of the nonprofit XDS Inc., which merged with the Center in 2011.

The Thanksgiving event provided a meal for clients/patients from the Center, the Department of Psychiatry, and others in the community. Thanks to volunteers from the Center, Chapel in the Pines, UNC School of Social Work, and Briar Chapel who served lunch to nearly 100 individuals.

The Center, XDS Inc. and private donors funded this annual event.
