Carolina Data Warehouse for Health Care (CDW-H) Honest Broker

  • Need data from EPIC for your research project?
  • Have you already received IRB approval but need some help extracting data for your research?
  • Have limited funding to pay for an analyst?
  • Need help combining clinical data with other datasets?

The “Honest Broker” position was established and supported by the department to assist scholars who are interested in accessing and using “real world” clinical data in the Carolina Data Warehouse for Healthcare (CDW-H) for their research projects. CDW-H is an electronic data repository containing historical Electronic Health Record (EHR) data from the UNC Health system. Researchers usually need to request CDW-H Data through the North Carolina Translational and Clinical Science (NC TraCS) Institute, which may take considerable funds and time. The departmental “Honest Broker” serves as a unit-level extension of NC TraCS to provide flexible and free service to scholars within the department. Currently, due to limited resources, the priorities of using the department” Honest Broker” are given to projects that are self-funded or have linkage to additional psychiatric-specific data (e.g., patient registry, surveys).

If you are interested in accessing the data from CDW-H to support your research, the first step is to schedule a 30-minute appointment at the informatics and data analytics joint office hours. It is highly recommended that an IRB approval has been received before the office hour, but it is not mandated.
