Who Are We?

Welcome to the official Society for Black Biomedical Scientists (SBBS) at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill’s webpage. We are an organization whose mission is to support the needs, aspirations, and success of Black biomedical scientists.  As a society we are dedicated to increasing the presence of Black scientific researchers and scientific literacy in the Black community.

What Do We Do?

We strive to create a network for Black biomedical scientists to thrive by making members and non-members feel a part of an inclusive community.  We firmly believe this organization aids those who want to be innovators and leaders in the biomedical field.  Although we are a UNC affiliated organization we are looking to expand our mission beyond this institution to all corners of the country so we may reach those who need this community most.

How We Came About?

There has been a local and national need for an organized network for Black students and professionals in the biomedical/biological field to come together.  Various other initiatives exist today and are similar to ours, however we feel that uniting African American graduate students and professionals in the biomedical field under one umbrella has yet to be done.  We created this space at UNC to serve our students, but we also want to create a pipeline of African American biomedical leaders not just at UNC but nationally as well.

What Can We Offer You?

We offer a plethora of experiences including an environment of inclusion and excellence through peer mentorship, academic advisement, and career planning.  Additionally, our committees host events for our members to grow with one another and to impact the community.  We also love to partner with organizations to host joint events (i.e food drives and/or networking mixers).
