Dr. Elizabeth Dreesen has been appointed as an Associate Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for the UNC Health Care Hospital system.

Dr. Elizabeth Dreesen

Dr. Elizabeth Dreesen recently served in the role of Chief for the Division of General and Acute Care Surgery, a role she held since 2015. Her legacy as Chief gives us much to celebrate as her leadership, creativity, and innovative spirit has resulted in many impressive initiatives.  She has overseen the growth of a division that has expanded its scope with respect to general and acute care surgery, critical care, and global surgery research.  As the Program Director for Surgical Critical Care, she brought her vision to identify, define and foster the skills that are required for a successful career in Surgical Critical Care.  Dr. Dreesen is a clinical leader at UNC Hospitals and has been at the forefront to advance many technical reforms to improve patient care and outcomes.

As such, it is with great pleasure to announce that Dr. Dreesen will have a more active and substantial role with the hospital to serve all of the surgical services as an Associate Chief Medical Officer (CMO), reporting to Dr. Tom Ivester.  In this role, along with being a member of the Epic User Committee, she will participate in ongoing Epic updates designed to facilitate chart review for providers and clarify code status in the OR, improve perioperative scheduling and the use of pre-care, streamline physician coding, and enhance patient flow for surgical patients throughout the hospital.  Dr. Dreesen is also an active participant in the ICU Clinical Advisory Group for the Surgical Tower.  We look forward to Dr. Dreesen’s continued contributions to the Department, School of Medicine, and the UNC Health Care system.
