Dr. Bruce Cairns is the Chief of the Division of Burn Surgery,  Director, North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center and the John Stackhouse Distinguished Professor of Surgery. Dr. Robert Maile is Associate Professor of Surgery in the Division of Burn Surgery.

They received the research grant for their project entitled, “Damage-Induced Activation of the TLR/mTOR/PPARg Axis Regulates the Immune Response After Burn and Inhalation Injury”, in the amount of $1,465,736 from December 15, 2018, to November 30, 2022.

The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) supports basic research that increases understanding of biological processes and lays the foundation for advances in disease diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.  NIGMS places great emphasis on the support of individual, investigator-initiated grants within its scientific mission areas.

The Research Project Grant (R01) is the original and historically oldest grant mechanism used by NIH. The R01 provides support for health-related research and development based on the mission of the NIH.
