What brought you to the Department of Surgery at UNC?

I recognized an opportunity to build a Pediatric Congenital Heart team and develop a program that aligns with my vision. I aim to create an environment where the entire team enjoys coming to work every day and feels fulfilled in our mission to care for children together. It’s a chance to start fresh and make a meaningful impact.

What inspired you to become a doctor/surgeon?

I find immense fulfillment in helping people through difficult situations, and it brings me great joy to support them during tough times. Although this is my everyday job, it’s an experience most families will never have to endure. No parent should have to go through this alone, and I want them to know we’re here together, facing it as a team.

The most rewarding part of my job is caring for children. I fell in love with working in the OR and enjoy the creative and challenging aspects of pediatric heart surgery.  My desire to become a doctor began when I witnessed someone choking and didn’t know how to respond. Seeing someone else step in to help made me realize I wanted to learn how to assist others in need.

Do you have any pre-surgery ritual?

I mentally walk through each case before performing it. The night before, I review all the data thoroughly. By the time I scrub in, I’ve already visualized successfully completing the procedure in my mind.

What profession did you want to be when you were a kid?

I grew up in a very small town with no medical professionals around me.  When I was very young, I wanted to drive a backhoe!

What is a goal you would like to achieve during your time at UNC Surgery?

To lead the program into the new Children’s Hospital and the opportunities that brings.

What is one thing you wish your patients or coworkers or families knew about you before they meet you?

I have a big heart (some might call me a big teddy bear) and deeply care about the patients and families I serve – they are always on my mind.

What might someone be surprised to know about you?

I love to cook.

What do you do when you aren’t working?

Photography, cooking, cards, puzzles and games.

How would you briefly describe yourself?

I am compassionate and always strive to put the needs of others first.

What’s your superpower?

Listening

Is there anything else you’d like colleagues, patients/loved ones, etc. to know?

I come from a humble background, and I feel like I don’t fit the stereotypical mold of a pediatric heart surgeon.
