June 1, 2010 — Dr. Bruce Cairns, director of the North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center, has been appointed by the American Burn Association as chair of its Research Committee. His term will run from 2010 through 2013.
June 1, 2010 — Dr. David Gerber, chief of the Division of Abdominal Surgery, has been promoted to Professor of Surgery effective June 1, 2010.
May 27, 2010 — Dr. Courtney Sommer, currently a third year General Surgery Resident, recently received a $5,000 grant from the Medical Alumni Endowment Grant Fund through the UNC School of Medicine’s Medical Alumni Association. The aim of the Endowment Fund Grant is to fund proposals from new investigators or established investigators exploring new areas of discovery from UNC faculty or housestaff that will promote excellence in education, research or service and has a high likelihood of being sustained in the future.
May 26, 2010 — Delegates of the Royal Society of Medicine’s Section of Surgery visited the UNC Department of
Surgery from May 21st through May 26th, 2010. Their visit included a joint meeting with the Surgery Department from May 24-25. During the meeting, members of the Royal Society of Medicine and faculty members of the Department of Surgery presented on various surgical education issues.
May 20, 2010 — Drs. David Gerber, Division of Abdominal Transplant division, and Ben Haithcock, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, have each been awarded a $10,000 grant by the NC TraCS Institute.
May 20, 2010 — Dr. Jeff Dehmer, a PGY-3 in the general surgery residency program, has been elected President of the UNC Housestaff Council for the one-year term beginning July 1, 2010.
May 17, 2010 — An article in UNC’s Endeavors magazine, a publication about discoveries and creativity at the university, highlights the research of Dr. Thomas Egan and his collaborators.
May 11, 2010 — We are sad to report the death of Benson R. Wilcox, M.D., a distinguished heart surgeon who served 29 years as chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He died at his home on May 11, 2010, after a courageous struggle with brain cancer.
