Description of research and/or clinical interests: Dr. Phanstiel’s lab studies transcriptional regulation during innate immune cell development both in healthy individuals and in the context of human disease. The lab is particularly interested in the mechanisms by which specific intergenic genomic loci, known as enhancers, influence transcriptional changes of genes hundreds of thousands of base pairs away. To accomplish their work the Phanstiel lab employs interdisciplinary techniques including DNA sequencing, bioinformatics, and genome editing applied to primary human cells and cell culture model systems.
