2016 Larry D. Keith Health Professions Recruitment Fair
June 25, 2016
Duke University, Durham, NC
The 2016 Larry D. Keith Area Health Professions Recruitment Fair will be sponsored by Duke University School of Medicine and the University of North Carolina Schools of Medicine and Dentistry. The local hosts will also include the NC AHEC Programs and Carolina Higher Education Opportunity Programs (CHEOP). Students and advisers will be invited from various institutions. Based on past seminars, the audience will represent 15-20 states and 40-50 health professional colleges and universities.
The purpose of the recruitment fair is to enable a group of summer program participants to expand their horizons on the professional school opportunities available to them, to enrich their understanding of the pre-professional planning process, and to meet personally with important professional school representatives. Approximately 250 minority and/or disadvantaged students -- mostly college juniors, seniors, and post-graduates -- will attend. These students attending the fair will come from the following summer programs:
- UNC Schools of Medicine and Dentistry's Medical Education Development (MED) Program
- UNC Chapel Hill Science Enrichment Program (SEP)
- Other students from surrounding NC schools and summer programs
The Recruitment Fair begins at 12pm on Friday afternoon. The agenda that afternoon will include an introduction of the professional school representatives, as well as the summer program participants. Representatives will be able to participate on a panel discussing their program/school and will be asked to give an overview of their programs as well as discuss topics such as:
- The admissions process
- Pre-professional planning
- Alternative health career pathways and options
- Financial aid
- Support systems
- The gap year
- Life in professional/graduate school
These sessions will conclude at 5pm Friday. Our keynote speaker will speak at dinner which begins at 6pm, and the annual talent show showcasing our students' talents from the various programs will start after dinner.
Breakfast will be served at 7am on Saturday morning followed by mock interviews at 8:30am. We will end the day with the two-hour recruitment fair from 10am - 12pm.
Panels: For those unfamiliar with our past conference, we invite our visitors to participate actively as members of the panels. The response form includes a space to indicate if you are willing to serve as a resource person. We will make every effort to assign you to a panel if you so desire. Please see list of discussion topics above.

You may also indicate your willingness to serve on this panel by checking the appropriate topic on the response form. Roles will be assigned prior to the session.
