Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program

The Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program specializes in mood and anxiety disorders that occur during pregnancy and postpartum. The program is directed by Dr. Samantha Meltzer-Brody. The mission is to provide state-of-the-art clinical care, research, and support groups to address the needs of women during this vulnerable time.

Perinatal Psychiatry Clinic

The clinic provides assessment and treatment, including both psychotherapy and medication for women with depression or anxiety disorders during pregnancy and the postpartum period. UNC physicians work with nurses, midwives, counselors, and social workers in the community to help create the best plan for managing symptoms and fostering a healthy pregnancy and postpartum period.

Perinatal Psychiatry Clinic at Rex Hospital

The UNC Perinatal Psychiatry Clinic has now expanded to Rex Hospital in Raleigh.  Pregnant and postpartum mothers with depression or anxiety may schedule an appointment at UNC or Rex. The Perinatal Clinic will be located at the Rex Family Birth Center within the UNC Specialty Women's Center.

Perinatal Psychiatry Inpatient Unit

The Perinatal Psychiatry Inpatient Unit is directed by Dr. Elizabeth S. Bullard.  The Inpatient program will provide specialized treatment and address the needs of women suffering with serious perinatal mood conditions. For more information, please see the Perinatal Mood Disorders Inpatient Program page. 


Free Support Group for Women during Pregnancy and Postpartum

The Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program now offers a free support group for women with depression or anxiety during pregnancy and up to one year postpartum. This group meets bimonthly on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month, from 6:30-8:00pm. Psychiatric nurse practicioner Chris Raines, RN MSN facilitates the meeting. This group is Co-Sponsored by the Department of Psychiatry Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program and the UNC Family Medicine- Department of Maternal and Child Health. Perinatal Loss Support Group

UNC Pastoral Care offers multiple forms of grief support for those who have experienced perinatal loss. The support group meets once a month at UNC hopsital.  For more information, please click on Perinatal Loss Support Group, or email Darryl Owens, Women's Services Chaplain/Grief Counselor.

 

Moms and Emotions Educational Course

UNC offers an educational group called “Moms and Emotions” taught by Dr. Cort Pedersen, at the UNC Women’s Health Information Center (WHIC) just off the lobby of the UNC Women’s Hospital. This is a one-time class, primarily to educate pregnant women anticipating childbirth. For details, please call 919-843-1759.

 

Perinatal Research Studies

UNC Researchers within the Department of Psychiatry are investigating prenatal and postpartum depression.  There are multiple research studies available for participation.  For details, please see our list of research studies.
