On Friday, May 15, over 160 attendees from UNC-Chapel Hill, ECU, UNC-Pembroke, UNC-Wilmington and Duke participated in the 4th annual SLAM-DUNC (Symposium for Learning about Alzheimer’s disease-related Medical Research at Duke and UNC). This educational event has become a staple of the Duke-UNC ADRC’s trainee opportunities.
Researchers, clinicians and trainees gathered at the UNC Friday Center for research talks, poster sessions. Additionally, Keynote Speaker, Dr. Timothy Hughes, gave a talk entitled Targeting the vascular contribution to dementia.
Several Center for Aging and Health personnel who are involved with the ADRC planned, organized, and hosted the event. These include Jan Busby-Whitehead, MD (CAH Director; ADRC REC Co-Director). Ellen Roberts, PhD, MPH (ADRC Executive Committee; UNC Geriatric Medicine Research Professor of Medicine) and Sophia Lourduraj (CAH Research Assistant).
The Duke-UNC ADRC is made up of researchers in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and related dementias across two major research institutions (UNC and Duke) and other institutions across Eastern North Carolina. The ADRC seeks to fight AD with education and research. Specifically, the researchers focus on identifying factors that contribute to AD and investigating elements contributing to the onset and experience of AD.
