UNC Anesthesiology’s Chair of the Faculty Recruiting Committee plays a critical role in identifying, engaging, and securing top academic anesthesiology talent and leading faculty recruitment for the department. On October 1st, 2025, incoming Faculty Recruiting Committee Chair Professor of Anesthesiology and Obstetrics & Gynecology Dr. Kathleen Smith will take over this role from outgoing Chair Professor of Anesthesiology Dr. Bryant Murphy.
Drs. Murphy and Smith are both proven leaders within the department and institution. Dr. Smith serves as UNC Anesthesiology’s OB Anesthesia Division Chief, UNC Hospitals’ PSQI Chair for UNCH Adult Sedation Committee, and North Carolina’s State Representative for the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology. Dr. Murphy is UNC Anesthesiology’s Division Chief of Community Practice, UNC School of Medicine’s Senior Associate Dean for Leadership Development, and served as former President of the North Carolina Medical Board.
