UNC Anesthesiology’s Visiting Professor (VP) Program hosts an exciting line-up of speakers for Winter/Spring 2025!
Mid-January, University of VA Neuro Anesthesia Division Chief Nadia Lunardi, MD, PhD, presented, “Sleep and Circadian Disruption Across the Perioperative Journey.” Dr. Lunardi is a leading translational neuroscientist whose combined focus in anesthesiology, critical care and pharmacology leverages her investigative focus on improving post-operative cognitive outcomes in both the anesthesiology and critical care settings.
In early February, University of Glasgow Honorary Professor and Past President of Regional Anaesthesia-UK Alan MacFarlane, MB ChB delivered the Visiting Professor Program lecture, discussing, “What’s New in Regional Anesthesia? From AI to Audit to AV Fistulae.” An is an established clinical researcher and lead contributor to major decision-making on the direction of his field, Dr. MacFarlane was recently named Clinical Lead of the Royal College of Anaesthetists Centre for Research and Improvement’s 8th National Audit Project (NAP), entitled, “Complications of Regional Anaesthesia.”
UNC Regional Anesthesia Division Chief Stuart Grant, MB ChB, noted: “Professor MacFarlane’s insights bring evidence-based best practices, and a global perspective to our department. Hosting visiting professors at UNC Anesthesiology promotes interdisciplinary collaboration, and enhances clinical proficiency, that we think ultimately improves patient care. By integrating visiting experts into grand rounds, the UNC anesthesiology community continues to evolve, ensuring excellence in our triple mission of education, research, and practice.”
In mid-February, UNC Anesthesiology welcomed Thomas Jefferson University Professor of Anesthesiology and Pediatrics Tetsu (“Butch”) Uejima, MD, to speak at the inaugural “Leadership Starts with Me” series, co-hosted by the department and the UNC School of Medicine Office of Faculty Affairs and Leadership Development (FALD). As former Pediatric Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine Chair and former Chief Medical Officer at Nemours Children’s Hospital (Wilmington, DE) and holder of other leadership positions, Dr. Uejima delivered a talk fittingly entitled, “What Does It Take To Be A Good Leader?”
In March, MUSC Associate Professor of Anesthesiology Dionne Peacher, MD, delivered the Visiting Professor Program lecture, “Pain Management in Thoracic Anesthesia: What’s New in 2025?” Dr. Peacher completed a fellowship in adult cardiothoracic anesthesiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (Boston, MA) and is trained in Adult Cardiac Anesthesiology, Advanced Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography, and Clinical Informatics.
