Dr. Mauck is the lead, contact Principal Investigator for the Biomarkers for Evaluating Spine Treatments (BEST) trial. This innovative trial is one of the largest sequential, multiple assignment randomized trial (SMART) ever to be performed in medicine. The main goal of the NIH-funded trial is to develop a precision medicine algorithm that will assign the best sequence of treatments for chronic low back pain based on an individual’s unique characteristics or phenotype. This will help clinicians make better clinical care decisions for patients living with chronic low back pain at the bedside. The University of North Carolina is a site in this 12-site multicenter trial and Dr. Mauck and UNC Associate Professor of Anesthesiology Dr. Brooke Chidgey are co-site Principal Investigators for this study.
