CAPSEL was invited back to the TSDA Bootcamp for the third consecutive year to teach introduction to TEE

Chapel Hill, NC – September 17, 2014

Drs. Rob Isaak, Lavinia Kolarczyk and Greg Balfanz, members of the UNC Department of Anesthesiology’s Consortium of Patient Safety and Experiential Learning (CAPSEL), were invited faculty in the 2014 Thoracic Surgery Directors Association (TDSA) Bootcamp held between September 11-14, 2014 at the William and Ida Friday Center in Chapel Hill, NC. The bootcamp, which lead by the UNC Medical Director for Perioperative Services Dr Richard Feins, brings together fellows in cardiothoracic surgery from over forty different surgical programs across the country. Additionally, faculty from over thirty different institutions, from several medical specialties, participates in this three-day intensive hands-on program. Drs Isaak, Kolarczyk, and Balfanz presented an introduction to transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). Their module consisted of an introduction to the TEE probe, allowing the participants to obtain basic views of the heart using a TEE simulator (Heartworks, London, UK) and then reviewing a slide show of TEE clips showing common pathology encountered in cardiothoracic and non-cardiothoracic surgery. This is the third consecutive year in which CAPSEL members have been invited to participate in this multidisciplinary, multi-institutional workshop.
