UNC was recognized among 495 “High Performing Maternity Care” Hospitals in 2026 based upon data analysis of multiple factors that U.S. News & World Report deems as determinants of providing high-quality labor & delivery services for uncomplicated pregnancies.
Since 2021, U.S. News & World Report’s widely regarded annual rankings have honored hospitals that provide high-quality labor & delivery services for uncomplicated and complicated pregnancies. Major determinants of high performance in maternity care include: 1) childbirth using C-section rates; 2) newborn severe complication rates; 3) routine vaginal birth after cesarean delivery (VBAC) rates; 4) episiotomy rates; 5) best practices to support breast milk feeding; 6) meeting federal criteria for “birthing-friendly” practices; and 7) outcomes tracking of disparities.
