UNC Anesthesiology congratulates Professor of Anesthesiology Wade Weigel, MD, on his recent appointment as the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA)’s 2026-2027 Chair of the Section on Education and Research, effective October 2026. 
Dr. Weigel has emerged as a leader and respected scholar within the ASA over almost a decade in practice. Past and current ASA leadership roles include: 1) Editor-in-Chief: ASA Summaries of Emerging Evidence (educational program); 2) Co-Chair: Development of ASA Neuromuscular Blockade Management guidelines; 3) Author: NPO (‘nothing by mouth”) Modular Update guidelines, and 4) Author: 2023 ASA GLP-1 (receptor agonists) guidance statement.
Dr. Weigel’s leadership in the field also spans serving a decade as an American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) Examiner, currently as a Full Examiner. His areas of expertise include neuromuscular blockade management, Out-of-OR anesthesia, quality improvement, thoracic anesthesia and regional anesthesia and quality improvement research.
