Panel Speakers

Dr. Benny L. Joyner, Jr

Dr. Benny L. Joyner, Jr is a Professor of Pediatrics, Anesthesia, and Social Medicine, the Chief of the Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine (PCCM), and Vice Chair of Quality and Safety for the Department of Pediatrics. He is a 3-time graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (BA-Secondary Math Education ’93, MD/MPH’02). From there, he completed a residency and chief residency at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore in The Bronx, NYC. He returned for a fellowship in Pediatric Critical care at NC Children’s Hospital at UNC-CH. He joined the University of North Carolina Chapel-Hill Department of Pediatrics faculty upon completing his fellowship in 2009. His academic interests focus mainly on the training of interprofessional teams in the care and resuscitation of the critically ill pediatric patient. He has developed simulation training modules for a variety of situations, including multi-system trauma, recognition of non-accidental trauma in pediatric patients, and simulations involving the care, management, and resuscitation of pediatric patients infected with emerging pathogens. He is an engaged leader in many local, national, and international organizations, including serving in multiple roles within the American Heart Association, most notably as the Co-Chair of the 2025 Pediatric Basic Life Support Guidelines Writing Group

 

Dr. Rocio B. Quinonez

Dr. Quinonez earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology/Zoology in 1992 and her Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (DMD) in 1996 from the University of Manitoba, Canada. She completed a one-year internship at Winnipeg Children’s Hospital before coming to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), where she earned her certificate in Pediatric Dentistry, Master of Science, and Master of Public Health Policy and Administration. Dr. Quinonez proceeded to complete a National Institute of Health Fellowship in Oral and Systemic Diseases and practiced for several years prior to returning to full-time academics in 2006.  

Dr. Quinonez is dual-appointed in the Division of Pediatric Dentistry and Public Health and Pediatrics at the School of Medicine. She currently serves as Associate Dean for Curriculum, which reflects the implementation of the new DDS program of study. Dr. Quinonez maintains a practice in pediatric dentistry and cares for children and adolescents in the Dental Faculty Practice and UNC Hospital.
