Treatment Services

UNC Tobacco Treatment Program Treatment Specialists

TTP offers treatment for tobacco dependence to thousands of people across North Carolina. Trained Tobacco Treatment Specialists (TTS) give compassionate care, collaborating with patients and employees to develop plans for becoming tobacco free. These individualized plans include behavioral strategies, cessation medications, and identification of resources that support tobacco-free living.

Those participating in our programs have a six-fold greater chance of becoming tobacco free. Services are provided regardless of ability to pay in the following settings:

  • UNC Family Medicine Center: Open to all community members
  • NC Cancer Hospital: TTP’s on-site TTS engage patients from across the state who are fighting cancer. By becoming tobacco free, patients increase treatment effectiveness and reduce risk for cancer recurrence.
  • UNC Hospitals: TTS ensure that patients receive medications for withdrawal upon admission to the hospital, resources for remaining tobacco free after discharge, and follow-up support.
  • Worksite Programs: TTP works with local and regional employers, including UNC Healthcare and the Town of Chapel Hill, to help their employees become and remain tobacco-free.

Education and Training

TTP offers skill-based training and technical assistance to promote comprehensive treatment for tobacco use and dependence. We work with clinicians from the medical and allied health fields, large health care systems and small community clinics, and have reached national audiences through webinars on pharmacotherapy, motivational interviewing, and systems change.

Research

The Tobacco Treatment Program focuses on research to advance tobacco use treatment knowledge and practice among healthcare providers and the community. This includes research within UNC Health Care Systems and throughout North Carolina focused on evidence-based practices in prevention and cessation.
