Dr. Samir Kelada

Dr. Samir Kelada has been promoted to Full Professor with tenure in the Department of Genetics, effective November 14, 2025.

Dr. Kelada earned his BS in Biological Chemistry (1997) and his MPH in Environmental Health and Certificate in Public Health Genetics (2000) from University of Michigan.  He earned his PhD in Environmental Health/Toxicology from University of Washington in 2006.  Dr. Kelada completed Postdoctoral training (2006-2012) at the National Human Genome Research Institute.  Dr. Kelada was appointed as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of Genetics at UNC-Chapel Hill, effective September 1, 2012, and was appointed as Associate Professor with tenure on September 1, 2018.  Dr. Kelada studies gene-environment (GxE) interactions with environmental health hazards.  Specifically, his lab focuses on the identification of GxE that affect the development of common airway diseases like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
