Building Community

Science is a team sport and benefits from the collective efforts of everyone in the lab. All members of the lab directly contribute to our lab culture and community – whether through action, ideas, or support. Our overarching goal is to create a lab that advances science, while maintaining an inclusive environment for everyone. We welcome different viewpoints, lived experiences, and perspectives in our research space. Interdisciplinarity is a strength of the lab and we strive to create a lab community where various professional goals are represented. We firmly believe that we are better when we work with people who have different perspectives, technical skills, or backgrounds.

Scientific Rigor & Integrity

An overarching goal of the lab is to do science with the highest level of scientific rigor. This means that hypotheses/methods are thought out and documented, data is analyzed in a systematic manner, and results are reported and interpreted regardless of the outcome. Where appropriate, studies will be pre-registered, and data/code will be made publicly available. Mistakes are bound to happen during the scientific process, but we commit to transparency and maintaining the highest levels of scientific integrity.

Mentorship

Trainees working in the lab should expect to receive mentorship. Part of my job as a lab director (and my favorite part) is mentoring students in research. My own career in research was largely driven by the mentorship I received by two fantastic female scientists, and I think about this with every trainee who joins the lab. Trainees can expect the following:

  • I will solicit feedback from you and mold my mentorship style to meet your needs for every semester that you are in the lab
  • I will touch base with you about progress on individual projects on a weekly or monthly basis
  • I will ask about your career-related goals and work to individualize your lab experience to meet your goals
