About

Dr. Gwendolyn Todd-Houston was born in 1951, the eldest of six, and raised on a farm in Zebulon, NC. On this farm she learned some of her most core values, the biggest of which was to not become an “educated fool”. This always reminded her to stay humble, relatable, and reminiscent of her upbringing. She had several inspiring teachers growing up. Her high school biology teacher was the first person who encouraged her to work hard and perform and was the reason she wanted to be a lab technician. She attended North Carolina Central University, where she pledged AKA, for both her undergraduate and graduate degrees. During her freshman year at Central she met Dr. Clark who became the catalyst for her interest in medicine and ultimately helped her get accepted into UNC School of Medicine. She completed the first two years of her Pediatrics residency at Emory & Grady Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, and the final year at Cedar Sinai in California. She excelled during her residency and was often entrusted with extra responsibilities at both hospitals. After residency Dr. Todd-Houston began practicing in Charleston, SC. Dr. Todd-Houston improved and changed the lives of her patients and their families in the area during her career. She retired to North Carolina. Years after she left Charleston, she was honored at a program in Charleston that recognized Black women who were great physicians in the community.
