Jared Lowe, MD, and Margaret Drickamer, MD

Jared Lowe, MD, assistant professor in the UNC Palliative Care Program has been appointed Medical Director of UNC Hospice. Margaret Drickamer, MD, who previously served in this role, will become Assistant Medical Director and continue as a Hospice attending physician.

“We are thankful for Margaret’s outstanding leadership,” said Laura Hanson, MD, MPH, Medical Director of the Hospice and Palliative Care Program. “She transformed the role with her leadership skills, extensive hospice experience, and a focus on ensuring high quality medical services as part of the new UNC Hospice Inpatient Unit.”

“We also welcome Jared to the position, a highly skilled clinician who consistently seeks to engage patients, caregivers, and the UNC Hospice Team to ensure high quality, professional care. He is rapidly establishing collaborative relationships across departments, with the goal of streamlining and enhancing the patient/caregiver experience.”

Lowe is a native of Charlotte, NC. After completing medical school at UNC, he attended Duke for internal medicine training, chief residency, and fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. He rejoined UNC in August 2020 as an Assistant Professor in the Division of General Medicine & Clinical Epidemiology. Lowe is board certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine.

“During my time in hospital training I came to believe there must be a better way to care for people at the end of life, and I saw what amazingly holistic care could be delivered in hospice,” Lowe said. “I am thrilled to be able to serve our community through working with UNC Hospice.”
