Clinical Services
Direct Patient Care
Our faculty physicians and advanced practice providers provide expert care to general medical inpatients on direct care Hospitalist services both in Chapel Hill and Hillsborough. Our faculty are available to our patients’ needs in the hospital 24/7 365 days a year.
You may see more than one provider during your stay but we aim to work seamlessly, providing coordinated services from admission to after discharge.
Consultation and Surgical Co-Management
Our faculty provide general Internal Medicine consultations for hospitalized patients across the specialty services available at UNC Hospitals. In this role, we perform pre-operative evaluations for our medically-complex surgical patients, with the goal of minimizing complications during this precarious period.
We also provide medical co-management care for several of our surgical departments including Neurosurgery, Orthopedics and Urology, evaluating patients daily to ensure comprehensive care during their surgical stay.

Procedure Service
The Medicine Procedure Service is a consult service at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, attended by the division faculty who have particular expertise in the use of point-of-care ultrasound and in bedside procedure technique. We work with resident physicians in the Department of Medicine to provide the following procedures with the highest quality and lowest complication rates seven days a week.
- Central lines
- Thoracentesis – diagnostic or therapeutic
- Paracentesis – diagnostic or therapeutic
- Lumbar Puncture
- Simple I&D
- Arterial lines, ABGs
- Arthrocentesis
- Bone Marrow Biopsies
We also provide instruction on the state-of-the-art techniques we use to other services throughout the hospital.
