An article published in Clinical Infectious Diseases by Drs. Ada Adimora, Joe Eron and Stephen Cole suggests a new approach to HIV clinical trials for black women, who bear the highest burden of infection among US women.

The article outlines current issues associated with testing bio-medical prevention products in populations where HIV incidence is higher than the general population but at a level where a randomized controlled trial would require thousands of participants. A new strategy would incorporate the use of drug concentrations and recognized epidemiologic methods to estimate intervention effects. This approach could strengthen the evidence base to enable black women to fully benefit from prevention research advances and decrease racial disparities in HIV rates.
